There are many resources and alternative energies that can be used to go green. Not only can it save money, but future generations will have safer water to drink, cleaner air to breathe, and have better overall health. Green living is getting back to the basics, using natures resources while protecting them and reducing waste. We just have to make the commitment to do so.
A few green living basics are recycling, rain barreling, and eating organic while earth friendly energy sources include solar and wind power. Driving an alternative fuel vehicle, weatherizing your home and using energy efficient appliances will also leave a positive impact on our planet and ourselves.
Alternative Energy For The Home
There has been a lot of talk about alternative energy lately and there is good reason for it. It is cheaper and more efficient than using the non-renewable resources that we are using today. There are many different types of alternative energy for the home such as wind and solar energy. Wind and solar energy can easily be set up for home use. If you do decide to use these types of energy sources you will soon see that they are far superior to what you are currently using.
Wind energy is a very clean type of energy. The energy is produced by wind moving a turbine which creates it. The energy then can go into storage areas or straight into your home. You might live in a windy area and this source of energy can really be a viable option. If you are thinking about setting up a wind based power system you need to research on how fast and how long the wind blows. Since the wind has to be blowing for the system to create energy, the location is very important. Wind can be fairly finicky in some places and it is not a good option for an energy source.
Solar energy on the other hand is a great option for just about everyone. The sun is always shining. A large surface is required to capture as much of the suns rays as possible. Since the sun only shines for a specific period of time each day, the placement of the solar collector is important. The solar collector, such as solar panels, need to be in a good location such as the roof of your house. This area gets the most sun every day. Solar panels can be installed and then used in a fairly short period of time. Since the sun does not shine as bright and for as long every day it is essential that the unused energy produced is stored. Storage of the energy will allow the owner of the home to use the energy in situations such as during the night, or when the home needs more energy to run more appliances.
Either option is a good choice depending on your location. The federal government has offered tax credits if you use an alternative type of energy, so you might want to check into this added benefit. You will save money by using these alternative methods and they will pay for themselves over time. The advantages of using an alternative energy are great and definitely out weigh the advantages of the source of energy we currently use.
Saving Water in The Home
There are many reasons that you should save water in your household. Some are to save money and some are to help with save the environment. You can do your part to save water by making sure that your toilet is not leaking, taking shorter showers, and not running the water while you are brushing your teeth.
Doing these things will not only save you money but they will help the environment because you are not using as much water. Conserving water will also extend the life of your septic system if you are a septic tank. Water your lawn only when it needs it and allow the water to seep into the ground to the roots where it will do the most good. Also if you have to water your lawn, do it early in the day when it is not hot and when the wind is not blowing. This will not only help you save water usage but it will also help you lawn be healthier.
Water is a resource that we need to survive. By doing your part of conserving water in your home you will allow other people to have access to the water they need. Leaky pipes are the main source of wasted water in the home. You should inspect your pipes every so often to see if they are in good condition. Leaky pipes are not only wasteful; they can cause damage to your house by rotting out wood and creating a good environment for mold. A good environment for mold is not something that you want in your house.
If you conserve water you will notice a decrease in the amount you owe on your water bill. Saving money on your bills is important especially now. Get your family involved and see who can take the shortest shower or who can brush their teeth without running the water. Who knows your family might enjoy a little competition.
